This style fairing can be modular. In this case, a single nickel-plated rear fairing can be combined with different front fairings for different effects. Shown here is the Sara Lace #1 pattern, which is lightweight and easily washed. Because of the polished metal rear fairing, it weighs more, and is not suitable for sports, though it looks amazing from any angle.

The honeycomb grid Sport Fairing is ideal for the outdoor lifestyle. It’s durable enough to stand up to sports, lightweight (though the additional durability does add to the overall weight), and easily cleaned. This one features a custom tattoo—the wearer's name and number, straight from his soccer jersey.

Tools for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery (MIRS)
Robotic systems have become the state of the art in many types of surgical procedures, allowing the surgeon to perform complex operations through small, fast healing incisions. Tackle is a member of an interdisciplinary team of NIH funded researchers at NCSU developing retraction and fixation tools for MIRS procedures. Our involvement has included creativity training for team members, concept development and prototyping work as well as participation in surgical trials.
The Open Prosthetics Project

Tackle has launched The Open Prosthetics Project to create useful and innovative prosthetic devices and fully publish our designs for anyone to use, customize, or improve on. By substituting public good for profits, we believe that we can generate far more societal benefit than if we commercialized and sold our ideas. We are currently developing several novel prosthetic concepts and seeking funding from donations and grants.

Experiment 1: Wooden Hand
Super Prosthetics Project is about exploring armwear as an object of empowerment, choice and identity. The purpose was to conduct a series of creative experiments to challenge current ideas of prosthetics and explore what a wearer might choose to create in that space if he or she could have any functionality or aesthetic. 

The project has been conducted at the Royal Collage of Art in London by Becky Pilditch and with the help of Holly Franklin. It has been developed in conversation with individuals who wear and make prosthetics limbs and the blog has been created to make the process visible for those who wish to share ideas and continue dialogue on the subject.

Each experiment took the form of an object, created for Holly to wear and critique in a public space. The final result was a repertoire of objects that explored the relationship between Holly, her hands and her peers, for the purposes of positive social interaction.

Jonathan Kuniholm

Jonathan Kuniholm, an Iraq veteran who lost his arm in 2005, is one of 300 engineers working on DARPA’s Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 program, which was created to solve the thorny interdisciplinary problems that stand in the way of creating truly functional prosthetic arms.
An international team led by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md., has developed a prototype of the first fully integrated prosthetic arm that can be controlled naturally, provide sensory feedback and allows for eight degrees of freedom—a level of control far beyond the current state of the art for prosthetic limbs. Proto 1, developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program, is a complete limb system that also includes a virtual environment used for patient training, clinical configuration, and to record limb movements and control signals during clinical investigations.
Jesse Sullivan, a former high-power lineman, lost both arms in 2001 after being electrocuted on the job. In these three photos, he demonstrates the capabilities of the Proto 1 prosthetic arm system during clinical tests at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Jacques Monestier

Sculptor and creator of automata Jacques Monestier has created a prosthetic hand that represents a provocative alternative to both hands and hooks; it is a design that simultaneously acknowledges its role yet also its artificiality.  THe back of his golden hand is cast in the likeness of a human hand, but from an alloy; the palm is upholstered in soft, luxuriant leather.  As Monestier explains, "Amputees often suffer a loss of self-image.  I wanted to transmute what might be considered a disfurement into something marvelous and exotic.  I wanted to create a hand that would no longer cause shame and repulsion.  I wanted the amputees themselves to be proud to have a prosthetic hand and pleased to look at it.  And for the people around them, I wanted the prosthetic hand to be an object of healthy curiosity, a work of art."

Redesigning the Prosthetic Arm

During the fall semester of 2009, 21 students embarked on a journey to conduct design work around upper limb prosthetics. Through readings, research, and an incredible group of guest critics including Aimee Mullins, Jon Kuniholm, Frank Wilson and Elliot Washor, the students attempted to put a dent in what may arguably be one of the most daunting design challenges imaginable—to design a better prosthetic arm.

The students took different approaches to the problem: some attacked it directly with mechanical improvements to existing prosthetics. Others offered devices and garments that introduced alternative modalities or provided new functionality. Some students took a more abstract approach, creating formal, often sculptural, gestures as a way to help us think about the notion of ‘prosthetic,’ while others took an extremely conceptual approach to investigating the paradigms and cultures around prosthetics and amputees.

Many of the projects were targeted at kids, arguing that there may be wider leeway in what would be deemed acceptable to the user. Some of these push the definitions of function, providing devices that are playful and life-affirming. The more sobering investigations in the group try to address the realities of arm amputees—as much as is possible by designers with both limbs.

Throughout the 10 weeks, the design project was humbling, daunting, and thrilling in its ability to demonstrate the power of design, and the potential for design thinking and creativity to impact this long-neglected problem. I hope that looking through these projects, you will feel their power and imagination, and use it to fuel your own paths to celebrating the lives of people, whatever their abilities.
